Volunteer opportunities within TUC are abundant! We encourage a friendly, welcoming team and provide training for all roles as needed.

No matter where you live in the United States, we have a need for you on our team. Many roles are remote. You likely qualify far better than you think.

Administrative
Executive Assistant

Assist the Executive Director with day-to-day operational needs on a per-need basis.

Great early experience for: Administrative assistant, office coordinator, program assistant, policy assistant, HR coordinator.

Scheduling: Assist with email or phone correspondence related to scheduling meetings. 

Email: Help draft email templates, check general inbox for important messages, escalate review times for correspondence based on priority. Follow-up on executive CC’s for continuing conversations.

Note-taking: Sit in on meetings and record detailed, thorough notes.

Interdepartmental: Provide updates on reports, concerns, and proposals from other teams, acting as a relay between executive leadership and team management.

Document filing and retention: Assist with filing or submission of various applications, and records storage of receipts, contact information, and other documents.

Office Duties: Provide additional light task work as needed such as badge lamination, envelope stamping, coordinating printing arrangements.

Time Expectation: EA should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week. This can vary based on changes in demand, with accommodations discussed in advance.

Effectiveness Coordinator

Monitor productivity of other project teams and design workflows and approaches to optimize operational efficiency.

Great early experience for: Project coordinator, operations assistant, program analyst, process improvement specialist, or program manager.

Process Improvement: Observe operational patterns within TUC. Develop workflows, recommend and test productivity tools, and collect efficiency data to optimize team operations.

Meeting Sit-In: Join set meetings across multiple teams to assess weak points in productivity. 

Reporting:
Create detailed advisory reports proposing best-effort recommendations for changes in tools, platforms, and workflows based on evaluation of alternatives and careful analysis.

Social Media
Social Media Manager

Create posts for our social media accounts, engage with our digital audience.

Great early experience for: Marketing manager, community manager, digital campaign manager.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the SMM role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the social media team and its resources.

Platform list: TUC is seeking assistance with YouTube, Bluesky, X, Instagram, Facebook, Threads, Reddit, LinkedIn, and TikTok. Additional platforms may be incorporated into TUC’s social media model over time.

Team Management: Manages the duties of our social media assistants (SMAs) and acts as a stand-in for unmet tasks. Maintains communication between SMAs, and reports any needs or concerns to executive leadership.

Social Media Engagement: Generates posts to be published on our social media. Monitors engagement and user activity among our social media platforms. Moderates comments/replies/tags. Follow our style guide to ensure our tone brand is within permitted parameters and advise on new strategies based on trend patterns. Relay PR or interview requests to executive leadership.

Networking: Develops functional plans and assignments for the purpose of connecting with other social media accounts of importance for the purpose of building collaboration opportunities and expanding our reach.

Training: Will train new SMA volunteers.

Time Expectation: SMM should expect up to approximately 10-15 volunteer hours per week.

Social Media Assistant

Discord Moderator

Moderate our public Discord space.

Great early experience for: Forums manager, server moderator, client relations assistant.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the DM role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the social media team and its resources.

Moderation: Gain a clear understanding of our Discord server’s rules and remove content which does not adhere. Inform Discord members why content is deleted, and enforce violations or escalate to leadership when uncertain.

Troubleshooting: Assist Discord members with questions about server function or where resources and channels can be found. Report trends to leadership so that improvements can be made.

Time Expectation: DM should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Project Out There (News & Media)
Senior Writing Coordinator

Guide and assist other writers on this team in a managerial role. Outreach with external parties for requesting writing interviews, story opportunity, and media partnerships. Maintain close conversation with leadership to build up TUC’s journalism team.

Great early experience for: Editorial director, content team lead, publishing manager, or senior content strategist.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the SWC role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the POT writing team and its resources.

Recruitment:
Will assist the ED with brainstorming and implementing recruitment campaigns and strategies for attracting writing talent to TUC.

Will communicate with either the recruitment manager (RM), ED, or other designated person for onboarded volunteers interested in writing opportunities within TUC. May assist the RM and ED with interviewing new writers.

Writer Management: As SWC, a primary goal of this role is to guide and assist other writers on TUC’s team. To accomplish this, the SWC will check in with writers on the POT writing team for progress updates, support, identification of resource need or accommodation, deadline reminders, and more. This may be accomplished through 1-on-1 management, group team meetings, and writer performance review.

Any identified need for individual writers or the writing team as a whole shall be communicated to the ED. This duty may expand over time to include more delegated responsibilities over the POT writing team.

Financial Expense: The SWC may have advisory duties related to expenses and financial allocation for the writing team, such as marketing, materials, events, fundraising opportunities, and more.

Networking: Will handle outreach tasks including cold emailing, cold calling, meeting (virtually and in-person) with potential professional partners and collaborators, and other networking opportunities.

Time Expectation: SWC should expect up to approximately 5-10 volunteer hours per week.

Article Writer

Produce featured articles for TUC within the writing team.

Great early experience for: Content writer, editorial assistant, communications associate, or staff reporter.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the writer role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the POT writing team and its resources.

Writing: Writes news reports, editorials, and story-based media in a timely manner to TUC’s growing repository of articles under the direction of the SWC or ED.

Interviewing: For stories containing an interview subject, may schedule and conduct virtual or in-person meetings for interview coverage.

Process Improvement: Works with leadership to provide suggestions on how to improve the writing process and team dynamics.

Time Expectation: Writer should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Video Lead Coordinator

Direct film crew and work with leadership to produce video content for TUC’s media and educational platforms.

Great early experience for: Video production manager, media project coordinator, content producer, or post-production supervisor.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the VLC role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the POT film team and its resources.

Film Production: Oversees the video making process from concept to setup to post-production. Under direction from leadership, help identify the resource and technical needs for various film projects, manage production assistants (PAs), and ensure timely operation of post-production editing to push content live on our video platforms.

PA Management: Work with PAs to determine best role assignment for filming needs, and coordinate on-set direction between projects. Factors to consider may include lighting, sound, clothing, set design, script, and filming assignment.

Interviewing: For stories containing an interview subject, may schedule meetings for requesting interviews.

Feedback Analysis: Reviews metrics such as view count, rating, comments/feedback and more to determine effect of TUC content for the purpose of improving the program.

Time Expectation: VLC should expect up to approximately 5-10 volunteer hours per week.

Production Assistant

Provide film and setup assistance in both an on-set and post-production capacity. Contribute to the video making process within the film team.

Great early experience for: Video production coordinator, media production assistant, content production specialist, or post-production associate.

Let Life Live (National Relocation)
Travel Coordinator

Coordinate travel for our relocation assistance program. Identify public moving resources and expand our LLL program.

Great early experience for: Program coordinator, relocation specialist, travel & logistics manager, or community services planner.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the TC role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the Let Live Life team and its resources.

Resource Collection: Identify available resources that can be used to help those applying for the LLL relocation assistance program. These may be both third-party and in-house.

Travel Coordination: For live cases, identify the best relocation strategy on a per-application basis to recommend for LLL applicants. Along with backup/alternative strategies, generate the step-by-step plan(s) for applicants to review and consider. 

Liaison Updates: Provide updates regarding application status to the applicant liaison (AL) and receive updates about the applicant from the AL for live cases.

Networking: To add additional resources and expand this program, the TC will also occasionally hold meetings with potential third-party collaborators and partners to explore future opportunities, vet other teams, and promote our program.

Program Improvement: Provide suggestions on how to improve LLL based on the logistical, legal, and financial needs of the program.

Time Expectation: TC should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Applicant Liaison

Serve as a direct point of contact for our relocation assistance recipients. Maintain meaningful direct dialogues with people in need.

Great early experience for: Client services coordinator, program support specialist, relocation coordinator, or case management associate.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the AL role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the Let Live Life team and its resources.

Relocation Facilitator: Directly communicate with LLL applicants to provide and maintain an emotional and logistical support dialogue. Provide updates to the applicant regarding application progress, relay questions and concerns back to travel coordinators (TCs) and leadership, and convey the assurance that someone is there for the applicant.

Initial Evaluation: With application data and consultation with TCs and leadership, conduct an initial meeting with the applicant to determine specific moving needs and wishes. Identify limitations, accommodation need, and any other relevant information to assist applicants in an individualized and careful manner.

Program Follow-up: Reaches out to LLL applicants following relocation to ensure travel needs have been met and to receive program feedback.

Timeliness: To provide quality support for LLL applicants, an AL must have availability for quick response and communication with both clients and leadership.

Time Expectation: AL should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

True Self Expo (Art Platform)
Artist Outreach Manager

Assist with outreach to artists, partners, and community members seeking to get connected with our art team. Develop art programs for TUC.

Network: Maintain a private list of those listed in “Outreach” for future opportunities.

Art Program Development: Under guidance from leadership, utilize the TUC artist network to develop new art program opportunities.

Showcase Coordinator

Help leadership organize our True Self Expo art showcase across multiple states.

TSE Art Showcase: Under guidance from leadership, plan and coordinate TUC’s art showcase to be held in multiple locations across the country. This may include utilizing the artist network compiled by the artist outreach manager (AOM) or identifying new business partners.

Event Coordination: Work alongside the TUC event coordination team to address logistical needs for TSE.

Time Expectation: SC should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

TransTruth (Research Think Tank)
Faculty Outreach Assistant

Establish contact with academic researchers and faculty across the US. Assist with ongoing projects related to research and health sciences.

Great early experience for: Academic partnerships coordinator, research outreach specialist, institutional relations associate, or higher education liaison.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the FOA role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the TransTruth team and its resources.

Outreach: Reach out to academic faculty, researchers, and other research institutional members to expand our network, begin relationships, and ask about collaborative needs.

Research Study Promotion: For researchers studying gender-affirming care or other needs within the gender-expansive community, identify studies in need of participants, promotion, personnel, and ask how TUC can use its network to assist.

Network: Maintain a private network of those listed in “Outreach” for future opportunities.

Time Expectation: FOA should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Event Coordination
Community Event Organizer

Works alongside leadership to build events for the community, large and small, including advocacy needs such as political/mobilization rallies as well as casual events such as community meetups and bridge-building opportunities.

Great early experience for: Event manager, event services job, festival planner.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the EO role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the event coordination team and its resources.

Event Brainstorming: Discuss event opportunities. Suggest new event ideas based on community or regional need. Work with leadership to discuss at-large and local events needed by other TUC teams. Develop a list of event types which includes a light summary of their logistical need weighed against intended outcome or result. Identify what resources would be needed for any given event.

Financial Expense: The EO will generate estimation reports of event cost and work with leadership to determine appropriate budgetary allocations.

Event Coordination: For approved events suggestion, the EO will receive duty assignments from TUC leadership or be granted authority to assign duties to other volunteers for the purpose of coordinating events. Duties such as partner outreach, media outreach, requesting location/venue/event space, event volunteer recruitment, event promotion, and other duties as needed will be assigned for ensuring clear task direction and smooth progress.

Event Debrief: Following events, discuss how coordination went and come up with ways to improve any event operational weakness for future events.

TUC Social Media: Collaborate with leadership or the social media team to create flyers/materials and generate a promotional strategy for any event.

Time Expectation: EO should expect up to approximately 5-10 volunteer hours per week. Event opportunities will vary based on region, and so an EO may expect periods of downtime between event planning.

Event Volunteer

In-person, event volunteer presence for our many events.

Great early experience for: Event boothing activities, future Trans Unity Coalition events.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the EV role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the event coordination team and its resources.

Event types: TUC events may include rallies, lobbying political engagement, social meets, community support, fundraising campaigns, and more. They may be in-person, virtual, or a hybrid of both.

Event assistance: Any event may differ from other forms of events, but can include duties such as transporting equipment, arriving to set up items, camera/stage/seating placement, tabling, donation collection, merchandise selling, handing out resources, deconstruction, item storage.

Specialized roles: In addition to the lighter volunteer duties, those with additional skills will be useful for ensuring safety and crowd control. This includes emergency responders such as first aid or EMS trained event medics and security such as field marshals and peacekeepers. People with such backgrounds are encouraged to reach out.

Time Expectation: EV time needs will vary based on event type and planned activities.

Recruitment
Recruitment Manager

Handle interviews and screening of new volunteer applications, suggest role placement within TUC, and onboard new volunteers to their assigned teams.

Great early experience for: Talent acquisition coordinator, volunteer services manager, human resources specialist, or recruitment consultant.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the Recruitment Manager role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the recruitment team and its resources.

Recruitment: Assist with promotional campaigns to drive up volunteer application interest.

Brand recognition: In similar fashion, lead campaigns to spread the word about TUC where our reach does not yet exist. Identify locations where TUC is lacking public awareness.

Marketing Assistant

Assist with large scale promotional projects to spread the word about TUC’s programs, mission, and volunteer openings.

Event promotion: Find locations, both physical and virtual, to promote events or activities TUC is holding. Expand our database of virtual (web or other platforms) locations for event promotion. Actively promote our events in these spaces.

Recruitment: Assist with promotional campaigns to drive up volunteer application interest.

Marketing Development: Work with leadership, effectiveness coordinator (EC), and/or independently to improve the efficiency of TUC’s marketing tactics.

Technical
Site Developer

Work within a dedicated technical team alongside other technical talent to build our website.

Great early experience for: Web developer, front-end developer, technical support specialist, or digital solutions consultant.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the SD role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the technical team and its resources.

Website: Work with leadership to improve the look and function of the TUC website, optimized for mobile and computer access. In practice, this may look like direct hands on development or consultative.

Aesthetic: Adhere to style guide and adapt it to the TUC website.

Data Privacy: Add safeguards by formulating frameworks for protecting user data.

Future-proofing: Create a development workflow for future volunteers to follow when website changes are needed.

Time Expectation: SD should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Data Security Analyst

Assist leadership with operating needs relating to data privacy, storage, cybersecurity, and access.

Great early experience for: Information security analyst, data privacy coordinator, compliance assistant, or cybersecurity associate.

Data Security: Develop workflows and frameworks to protect user data provided to us by applicants, clients, and volunteers. Strengthen the security of the TUC website and storage centers.

Legal Compliance: Adhere to compliance laws regarding use and storage of user data.

Cost Analysis: Advise on associated costs stemming from alternative options and submit predicted cost reports for leadership to review.

Outreach
Partner Outreach Assistant

Work with both leadership and other TUC teams to communicate with third-party organizations, business, staff, teams, and other potential partners to grow our network. Find new contacts and initiate first contact with potential partners.

Great early experience for: Strategic partnerships associate, business development coordinator, corporate relations specialist, or community engagement manager.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. All duties and responsibilities pertaining to the POA role are subject to change at the discretion of the non-profit ED, but will be best kept in line with the essential needs of the outreach team and its resources.

Data Mining: Search for information regarding third-party non-profits, businesses, councils, celebrities, and any other potential partners, and catalogue these resources into our growing database. Identify best methods to conduct these searches, including weighing productivity tools or service agreement options for intelligence platforms.

First contact: Begin communicational outreach to potential partners, such as email, calling, meeting in person, social media. For potential partners or teams interested in learning more about TUC, schedule meetings to virtually meet with these stakeholders and represent TUC while introducing our team to third-parties. Conduct interviews and introductions, and take meeting notes regarding scope, mission, business profile, upcoming collaborative opportunities, and other pertinent information.

Follow-up: In special cases, lead follow-up dialogues regarding ongoing event or partnership opportunity to build functional relationships with established contactees.

Partner evaluation: Create summaries of partner communications to report impressions including willingness to collaborate, potential impact of partnership, event urgency, and other qualifying data.

Time Expectation: POA should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Public Relations Assistant

Handle PR responses and interview opportunities under TUC guidance. Assist with PR conference coordination efforts.

Great early experience for: Communications coordinator, public affairs specialist, media relations associate, or corporate communications assistant.

Public Relations: Interact with reporting agencies to field questions on behalf of TUC. Participate in interviews, both in-person and remote, to officially represent TUC in the public eye.

PR Conferences: Work with leadership to coordinate conferences with multiple reporters for sharing official statements on public issues.

Reporter Database: Build a growing list of reporters, news outlets, journalists, and other communications teams to expand our media network, and report on where future PR opportunities lie.

Time Expectation: PRA should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Fundraising
Grassroot Funding Manager

Fundraising Strategy: Work with leadership to develop fundraising plans and opportunities to maximize funds within TUC’s non-profit system. Focus on grassroots support and address the challenges and limitations that come with this fundraising model. Identify target donation audiences and advise leadership on where to focus TUC efforts.

Grant Assistant Oversight: Manage grant assistants (GA) and check in regarding their updates or needs. Schedule meetings for periodic interaction.

Time Expectation: GFM should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

Work with the TUC fundraising team, under the guidance of leadership, to seek higher-level grant and sponsorship opportunities accessible to TUC.

General Provision: The following duties are non-exhaustive. As such, additional needs may be incorporated as this role develops. Grant Searching: Under guidance from leadership, find public and private grants applicable to TUC, and continually add new results to a database shared with TUC leadership and the fundraising team. 

Information Inquiry: For grants which require establishing communication to request information on (email, call, videoconference, etc), the GA may be required to reach out on behalf of TUC and maintain communication in a timely manner for information and as part of any application process.

Search Report: For each grant, build a report breaking down eligibility requirements, deadlines, awardee amount, overall application process, likelihood of grant approval, and provide a recommendation to leadership on which to prioritize in applying for.

Application Pre-fill: In certain cases, begin pre-filling applications on behalf of TUC to improve submission efficiency.

Time Expectation: GA should expect up to approximately 2-5 volunteer hours per week.

  • Meeting with lawmakers, business leaders, celebrities and other powerful figures to promote transgender advocacy in our country, as well as to identify all current forces harming the social welfare of our community.
  • Teaching free life-saving technique including CPR, first aid, and self-defense.
  • Holding regional conferences, activities, and community events to create safe havens for the trans community and allies to come together for visibility and support.
  • Providing relocation assistance for trans people seeking to flee their location due to gender discrimination, violence, and other serious reasons, as well as resource sharing.
  • Political engagement and legislative identification/response, as well as other forms of lobbying.
  • Promoting American trans culture by partnering with artists to showcase art of gender-expansive themes.
  • Conduct and support research about the current state of safety and equity for the transgender community in our country by region, state, locality.
